Meet the Leaders Behind Monomoy’s Credit Strategy

Monomoy began investing in credit in 2015, marking an expansion of the deep sector knowledge and cumulative insights of the firm’s previous ten years of experience. The opportunity to build upon Monomoy’s existing investment approach with a new strategy and team presented an exciting challenge for David Robbins, who serves as Partner and Head of Credit Strategies for Monomoy.

Today, Monomoy’s credit strategy focuses on opportunistic credit investments, focusing on first lien term loans and senior secured notes. Mirroring Monomoy’s equity approach, the credit strategy team focuses on debt opportunities in middle-market businesses across diversified end-markets in North American industrial and consumer sectors. The credit strategy continues to build on the robust foundation of Monomoy’s broader platform – seeking to leverage the firm’s operating and sector expertise to diligence and actively manage the credit portfolio while upholding a patient and disciplined investment approach.

David Robbins – Partner & Head of Credit Strategies

David joined Monomoy in 2015 to develop the firm’s credit capabilities. Over the past nine years, he has built and managed a dedicated credit team and strategy.

Over the past 25 years, David’s career has spanned senior positions at HIG Bayside Capital and GSC Group. At HIG, David was responsible for leading investments in opportunistic public and private debt securities and positioning Bayside to take control of middle-market companies through financial restructurings. Prior to HIG, David spent eleven years at GSC Group. As Senior Managing Director and Co-Manager of GSC’s distressed credit team, David led the firm’s middle-market control and non-control distressed debt investments. David was also an initial member of GSC’s European mezzanine operations, which provided mezzanine lending across Western Europe and made opportunistic investments in stressed European high-yield bonds. David began his career at The Blackstone Group in their Private Equity and Mergers and Acquisitions group.

David brings decades of cycle-tested investment experience to the Monomoy platform. As the Head of Credit Investing, David’s responsibilities span across deal execution, portfolio management and leading the credit team’s initiatives, ensuring a collaborative and effective approach to achieving the firm’s strategic objectives.

After nine years with the firm, David maintains that the people at Monomoy remain one of its greatest assets. He attributes the credit strategy’s evolution from a concept to a successful enterprise to the exceptional caliber of the team and widespread support across the firm. The growth of the strategy has been a source of considerable pride for him.

Keith Motelson – Managing Director, Investment Team

Keith joined Monomoy in 2016 from DW Partners, where he held a senior investment role specializing in opportunistic credit and equity. Keith was previously a private equity investor at Warburg Pincus, focusing on consumer, industrial, and special situations. He began his career as an investment banker in JP Morgan’s Global Mergers & Acquisitions group.

Keith’s nearly two decades of experience investing in credit and equity reflects many of the cornerstones of Monomoy’s history and business. Collaboration and integration across teams are two facets that attracted Keith to the firm back in 2016. Keith is responsible for helping source the credit strategy’s investment opportunities, underwriting and monitoring.

Keith notes that Monomoy’s values are not just buzzwords but rather core tenets that underpin our culture and contribute to our success. Teamwork, continuous improvement, humility and accountability drive everything we do.

Jordan Matusow – Managing Director, Capital Markets Team

Jordan joined Monomoy in 2015 from Nomura Securities, where he was an Executive Director in Corporate Credit Sales working across leveraged loans, high yield, distressed and investment grade credit markets. Previously, Jordan was an Executive Director in Institutional Credit Sales as well as a Director in Debt Capital Markets at UBS Securities. He began his career as a corporate lawyer at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP. Jordan’s nearly twenty years of experience in the credit markets uniquely position him to assist the team in sourcing and executing credit investment opportunities while managing capital market relationships and activities for the broader Monomoy platform.

Jordan flags Monomoy Credit Team’s multi-faceted diligence process and deep sector expertise as differentiators that enable the firm to form a unique perspective within the broader market.
